Looking for festivals in 2009

Festival is one of event which will attract lots of people. In 2009, with purspose: welcome 5 millions foreign tourists to Vietnam, there are many festivals which will be expectantly held.

1. Vung Tau city to host international Kite Festival:

The International Kite Festival 2009 is scheduled to open on the morning of March 27 in Ho Tram Beach Resort & Spa, Xuyen Moc District, Vung Tau City.

Seven countries and territories around the world have registered to take part in the event, namely Cambodia, Germany, the Philippines, Indonesia, New Zealand, Canada and Taiwan, according to the organising board. Preparations for the event have all been completed. During the festival, numerous activities will be held, such as kite flying shows by children and sponsors, and performances featuring the history and origin of kites in each country. On March 28-29, kite-flying groups will perform at the main base of operations in Vung Tau City.

2. Ethnic minority culture day in Gia Lai Province

The province of Gia Lai’s Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism has announced that a cultural day of ethnic minority groups in Gia Lai Province will take place in the city of Pleiku from April 3 to 4, 2009.

This will be a unity festival for ethnic minority groups in Gia Lai Province, and an opportunity to prepare for the International Gong Culture Festival to be held at the end of 2009. Diverse cultural activities will be held during the ethnic minority day, including an exhibition on the cultural products of ethnic minority groups in the province, a gong festival, art performances by various ethnic minority groups, and a meeting between gong performance artists and craftsmen from ethnic minority traditional handicraft villages in the province.

3. Halong Carnival 2009 to open this spring

The carnival 2009 is scheduled to take place in Halong City, Quang Ninh Province from April 25 to May 2, featuring floating stages and impressive fireworks displays. The opening ceremony will be held at 5.30pm on April 25 at Bai Chay Ferry in the form of a carnival on the sea and in the air, it will be called “Halong, a World Cultural Heritage-Rendez Vous”. There will be a fireworks show at the closing ceremony on May 2. The event will be broadcast live on VTV1 and VTV3. During the week of the carnival, many activities will be organised, such as a food festival among the main economic zones in northern and north-eastern provinces, performances by domestic and international artists, sports competitions and business fairs.

4. Hue Traditional Handicrafts Festival

Vice-Chairman of the Thua Thien – Hue’s provincial People’s Committee Ngo Hoa presided over a meeting to listen a report by the city of Hue’s People’s Committee about their plans for the upcoming Hue Traditional Handicrafts Festival 2009. With the theme “Hue Traditional Handicrafts – Identity and Development”, the festival will be held from June 12th to 14th. Handicraft production, artistic performances and handicraft manufacturing teaching will take place during the festival. In addition, there will be exchanges between artists and festival participants. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development will also hold an exhibition about Vietnamese traditional handicrafts at the festival, as well as a contest on handicraft products and artistic performances and specific cultural activities. The festival is expected to draw the participation of craftsmen from traditional villages, as well as artists and antique collectors from throughout the nation. At the meeting, Hoa asked the city of Hue’s People’s Committee to be open to all ideas in order to come up with a complete and comprehensive plan. The festival will be an important cultural event to popularize Hue’s unique culture and values, contributing to the tourism development of the province and contribute to the 1000th anniversary of the foundation of Thang Long – Hanoi.

5. Nha Trang Sea Festival

The Nha Trang Sea Festival 2009 will be organised from June 6-12 to attract more domestic and foreign tourists to the central coastal province of Khanh Hoa, said a local official.

The province has now completed all necessary preparations for the biennial event, the fourth of its kind so far, said Le Xuan Than, Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee and Head of the organising board, on February 18.

According to the official, this year’s festival will feature a broad range of culture, sports and tourism activities, including street festivals, exhibitions of books, photos and calligraphy, French film screening, art performances and water sports competitions.

Art troupes from France, Ukraine, Japan and the Republic of Korea are expected to participate in the festival.

Organisations and businesses both inside and outside Khanh Hoa have to date pledged to contribute almost VND 10 billion to support the hosting of the festival.
